Common Contrast Agent Safe for CT Use
 
The contrast medium iopromide, which has been used on more than 70 million patients worldwide, can be used for all kinds of computed tomography (CT) imaging, regardless of the dosage or volume needed, according to a new study.

In the study, scientists from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, both in Boston (MA, USA), assessed 29,508 patients who underwent contrast-enhanced CT with iopromide for a range of diagnostic reasons. Out of the patients examined, 29,297 suffered no unfavorable side effects due to the contrast agent utilized. Of the 211 who had adverse effects, only four were rated as severe. The study was published in the January 2005 issue of the American Journal of Roentgenology.

According to the scientists, iopromide has been available in the United States for approximately 10 years and can be administered either intra-arterially or intravenously, but until now its safety has only been established for certain procedures such as angiography and abdominal CT and only at specific dosage amounts.

“We undertook the study to clarify some unresolved questions about intravenous contrast agents and to have a benchmark study regarding the safety of the agent in a large group of patients,” said Koenraad J. Mortele, M.D., lead author of the article. “We believe this study provides insight into the safety of this specific contrast in a large group of patients and attempts to answer some of those unresolved questions regarding CT contrast agents,” added Dr. Mortele.
